Pet Dental Care for Good Health
We take dental X-rays before dental procedures.
One of the most commonly overlooked and important areas of maintaining your pet’s good health is quality oral and dental care. A regular routine of care for teeth above and below the gum line can dramatically extend the life of your pet. Nebraska Animal Medical Center recommends preventive care as the key to maintaining your pet’s long-term oral health.
At every exam, your pet’s mouth will be thoroughly checked for:
- Correct bite
- Jaw injury
- Abscesses
- Gingivitis
- Fractured teeth
- Damage to enamel
- Tartar and calculus build up
We will make recommendations to maintain or improve oral health. Your pet might need a professional cleaning, or prophylaxis, for his or her teeth. We’ll show you how to brush your pet’s teeth and may make other recommendations that can keep the teeth cleaner and healthier.
In addition to cleaning, we provide periodontal services and extractions done properly and professionally. Because these surgical solutions require up-to-date information on the latest techniques, our staff participates regularly in dental education seminars to improve their knowledge. Dr. Forney is able to perform root canals to salvage teeth that otherwise might have to be extracted. This helps the pet retain the tooth and the ability to chew food.
Digital Dental X-Rays for Pets
Nebraska Animal Medical Center relies on digital dental X-rays (radiographs) to assist us in assessing the condition of your pet’s mouth and teeth. This type of imaging allows us to see the state of your pet’s teeth both above and below the gums. Digital technology displays images almost immediately so that we can see every detail.
Teeth Cleaning Is Part of Your Pet’s Regular Routine
Regular dental prophylaxis (cleaning and polishing) helps assist in keeping your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. The teeth are ultrasonically scaled, removing tartar and calculus. The final step is polishing so that bacteria have no place to hide.
Anesthesia
Just as we do in surgery, whether we are performing a cleaning or extraction, we also will perform pre-anesthetic blood tests before we administer any anesthesia. General anesthesia makes sure that your pet will have no anxiety and will not move during the procedure. Heart rate and temperature are monitored throughout the treatment and a skilled licensed veterinary technician will be with your pet during the procedure and recovery.
