Surgery at Nebraska Animal Medical Center
 |
Every measure is taken to assure our patients are healthy and at minimal risk for anesthesia. It is recommended that every patient has blood work done before anesthesia to ensure the kidneys and liver are properly working to metabolize anesthesia. This blood work will also indicate if there are any current infections or anemia. We also recommend our patients have an electrocardiogram (ECG) done before anesthesia to ensure the heart is functioning correctly. A physical exam is also done by the doctor before being sedated. An intravenous catheter is placed ensuring direct access to the vein and also delivers fluids to help metabolize anesthesia.
Any NAMC staff member can help explain our surgery recommendations when scheduling an upcoming surgery. |
NAMC's State-of-the-Art Surgery Suite contains the following items to help ensure your pet receives the highest standard of care.
|
Monitor: This monitors a variety of vital funcitons such as: heart rate, oxygen levels, temperature, electrical waves of the heart, breaths per minute, and blood pressure. These are all very important with anesthitized patients. This monitor can be set for different parameters by species. If normal ranges are not maintained the moitor will sound an alarm.
Water Blanket: This blanket is specially designed to circulate warm water keeping the patients body temperature at an optimum level.
Fluid Pump: Intravenous fluids are given to each anesthetized patient to help metabolize anesthesia through the body for a quicker recovery.
Technician: A technician monitors every anesthetized patient at NAMC to ensure the patient is doing well under anesthesia. Every 5 minutes vitals are logged such as blood pressure, heart rate, mucus membrane color, capillary refill time, breaths per minute, oxygen level, and body temperature.
Anesthesia Machine: We use Isoflurane gas anesthetic. This is one of the safest gas anesthetics on the market. Thus allowing the techinican to take primary control over the plains of anesthisa.
Laser: The laser is used on almost every procedure at NAMC. The laser cauterizes blood vessesl and nerve endings as it incises, as a result the patient may have less irritation at the incision sight and less bleeding during the procedure.
Sterile Packs: Each surgery is done with steam sterilized instruments. It is important to us that there is a sterile field and equipment when performing surgery.
Surgeon: During surgery our doctors wear a surgery cap and mask as well as a sterilized surgical gown and gloves. This ensures minimal contamination during surgery.
At Nebraska Animal Medical Center, we are dedicated to the absolute best in safety for our surgery patients. We gladly put together estimates for surgeries, so there are no surprises to you. Feel free to call us anytime about how we can help your pet.
