What is Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy helps to control cancer cells by stopping them from growing and multiplying. However, this treatment not only destroys the cancer cells but can affect healthy cells, as well, causing side effects. After the treatments are finished, healthy cells usually repair themselves. When we use chemotherapy to treat cancer, we use different types of medications called “anti-cancer drugs.” Depending on the type of cancer, the extent of the disease, and your pet’s overall health, there are different drugs that may be prescribed.

Pet Cancer Treatment Side Effects

We use many of the same drugs human oncologists do, but dogs do not generally suffer the same kind of side effects, such as hair loss, that human cancer patients may experience. Because chemotherapy in dogs is often used to assist in prolonging their lives, we are able to utilize lower doses and fewer drug combinations to treat them. However, there are some pets that may experience some adverse side effects such as:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Fever or sepsis

Working with you, we’ll make sure you know what to expect and how to ease your pet’s discomfort. We can also advise you on the best foods to feed your pet if side effects are causing digestive problems.
